DC Power FC Post-Match Quotes
Interim Head Coach Phil Nana
On Power FC’s first win of the Spring slate…
“More than the win I’m really happy with the performance from the group,” Nana said. “You can see how we’re constantly growing and becoming the team we want to be. I thought we controlled most aspects of the game. The possession, space, tempo, the ball. Out of possession, I think we got our tactics right with our press and block shape.”
On Gianna Gourley’s game-winning goal and her overall performance…
“When I spoke to her a few days ago, she told me she was going to make sure we got this win tonight,” Nana said. “For her to go out there and score that goal, her confidence is growing and almost oozing out now and I’m super happy for her. When she came on, she said she needed someone to believe in her and she’d score goals. I told her I believe in her and let’s work together. We’re doing just that and slowly but surely, we’re getting to where she wants to be and to where our team needs to be.”
On what needs to be improved upon to notch Power FC’s second-straight win against Dallas…
“It takes a while to build a team and get all of us on the same page,” Nana said. “Now we’re on the same page and it’s just a matter of perfecting our game model. We know all the different phases and know what’s expected of the different phases. Now we’ve got to clean up the player actions to make sure we’re not just scoring one goal but we’re scoring two, three or four goals a game. Also, clean up some actions to make sure we’re getting more shutouts.”
Forward Gianna Gourley
On feelings after clinching first victory of the Spring slate…
“It feels good,” Gourley said. “I felt like it was one of our best team goals and team play. We were bouncing it quickly one touch back and forth and it opened a lot of gaps. It came easy and it was fun. I know our team’s capable of playing that way and that’s just a spark of what we have coming. We’re building and we’re growing and it’s exciting.”
On what needs to happen to keep building in the right direction…
“Defensively, we’ve being playing well the past few games and look sharp back there,” Gourley said. “Up top, our focus has been to score more goals. Even today, we had one but I know I missed a few opportunities and others could have been put away by other teammates as well. Just continuing to build on that.”
On Power FC’s evident team chemistry…
“From day one, the culture’s been great,” Gourley said. “We’ve supported each other, and a lot of teams would have caved considering we’ve had a lot of results not go our way. We’ve stayed together and it’s why we still play with fire and play with passion. When someone scores, we celebrate because it’s a team effort and we’re happy for one another. We have a bond here and we all celebrate together knowing what we put in day in, day out. It’s nice to celebrate together because it’s been a long time coming.”
