DC Power FC earned a point in a hard fought match against Sporting JAX to open the September calendar of the Gainbridge Super League Fall Season. Coming off a strong win on the road against the defending champions, Lexington SC, DC Power faced another championship contender team.
The first half was a tight contest as both sides played a physical and aggressive match. DC and Jacksonville both looked dangerous in front of goal but entered the half at a stalemate with neither team finding the back of the net. DC Power defender, Susanna Fitch, came on at halftime and quickly started causing trouble for Jacksonville down the right side. In the 59th minute, Fitch played a cross to forward Kayla Colbert whose shot ricocheted back into the box. Defender Claire Constant was first on the ball, burying her shot in the top of the net to put DC Power ahead.
A few minutes later, Sporting JAX earned a free kick just outside of Power’s box. DC were unable to clear the ball, which bounced around before being poked into the left corner by defender Maggie Illig. As the second half went on, DC continued putting pressure, with shots coming from Colbert and midfielder Emily Colton. Unable to find the go ahead goal, the match ended in a tie as both teams remain three points apart at the top of the table.
DC Power were the first team to take points from Sporting JAX this season and look a threatening side this year, staying in second place with seven points. Next week they will again go on the road and look to win the full three points against 7th place Dallas Trinity FC on Sunday, September 13.

Q: On Kayla Colbert’s contribution in the match…
A: “She’s playing free without any fear, and no matter how much pressure is on her, she’s able to either combine around that pressure or get past it. That’s the ability a good player has — things slow down for them in those moments, and they find their way out of any situation, especially in tight spaces.”
Q: On the biggest adjustment he made at halftime…
A: “We wanted to make sure we could play through the middle and open up gaps there. We asked our central midfielders to get wide — at least one of them — to pull one of their central midfielders out of the middle so we could play through it. I think we did it a few times, but not enough, and they seemed to have a bit more energy than us in the second half. I’m not sure the adjustments paid off, but there are things we need to keep working on.”

Q: On how she saw tonight’s game overall…
A: “I would say we fought really hard in the first half. We obviously scored a goal, but one thing we’ve struggled with all season is letting them get a chance right after we score. We have to figure out how to eliminate that and stay prominent throughout the whole 90 minutes.”
Q: On what the team will carry from tonight’s game onto the next one…
A: “I think one thing we’ll take into the next couple games — for the rest of the season — is our fight on the field. Our coach always emphasizes being competitive, getting into tackles, going body to body in the center of the field, and I think you saw that today.”

Q: On how she has adjusted since joining the team…
A: “I think it’s been great. The team has been super welcoming — the coaching staff, the girls, I really enjoy being here. I know I impact the game when I come on the pitch, so I’m just trying to stay patient and maximize the opportunity in front of me. I feel super good.”
